White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area

The White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area was established on 3rd November 1980. It spans across the districts of Hodonín, Uherské Hradiště and Zlín. It covers an area of 715 km². Its axis runs through the White Carpathians mountain range, extends into the Lower Morava Valley Protected Landscape Area, and in the area east of the spa town of Luhačovice, it forms part of the Vizovice Highlands Protected Landscape Area. This is a so-called bilateral protected area. The area extends across both the Czech and Slovak sides. The Slovak protected landscape area was established in 1979 and covers an area of 435 km². The White Carpathians are the highest mountain range on the southwestern border. Due to their natural and landscape qualities, the White Carpathians were included among European biosphere reserves within the UNESCO Man and Biosphere programme.

Unique Nature

The nature of the White Carpathians has much to offer. You’ll find unique nature, picturesque landscapes, monuments, and numerous preserved folk customs. The landscape character of the central and northern parts of the White Carpathians is formed by relatively sparse settlement of the forest clearing or scattered farmstead type. There are no large industrial enterprises here. The architecture of entire villages is also preserved – Lopeník, Vyškovec, Žítková. Thanks to extensive meadows, the White Carpathians belong among Europe’s most valuable grassland biotopes. The reason for designating the area are its exceptional values, particularly the unique communities of meadows and pastures with abundant orchid populations. Another valuable element is the extensive forest complexes in the central and northern parts of the mountain range.

Cycling Tourism

Cycling enthusiasts will also find their place here. You can set off on the long-distance Beskydy-Carpathian Trail or choose one of the regional routes. The ridges of the White Carpathians provide good conditions for undemanding hiking. However, given the suitable profile of forest networks and field paths, the route is also cycleable in unfavourable weather. The Czech side is less rugged. This allows you to easily overcome elevation gains of several hundred metres. Open terrain with views of Moravia and Slovakia await you. Follow the marked trails when travelling. They can lead you all the way to the highest point of the White Carpathians, Velká Javořina.
