Spa treatment on insurance in 2026 – who is entitled and how to apply

Stručná odpověď

In the Czech Republic, health insurance covers two types of spa care: comprehensive (KLP), where insurance pays for accommodation, meals and treatments, and contributory (PLP), where only treatments are covered. Luhačovice specialises in respiratory, digestive and metabolic conditions. Patients on PLP can stay at Hotel Vincent at competitive rates.

Who is entitled to spa treatment covered by insurance?

In the Czech Republic, there are two types of spa care covered by health insurance:

Comprehensive spa care (KLP)

  • Fully covered by insurance including accommodation, meals and treatments
  • Proposed by treating physician, approved by insurance company’s reviewing doctor
  • Length of stay: typically 21 or 28 days
  • Patient pays only regulatory fee (100 CZK/day)

Contributory spa care (PLP)

  • Insurance covers only treatments
  • Patient pays for accommodation and meals themselves
  • Length of stay: typically 21 days
  • Excellent opportunity for accommodation at Hotel Vincent at significantly lower prices than spa houses

Indication list — which diagnoses qualify for spa treatment?

Luhačovice is a specialised spa town for treating respiratory diseases. Indications include:

Respiratory diseases (main indication for Luhačovice)

  • Chronic bronchitis and COPD
  • Bronchial asthma
  • Allergic rhinitis and sinusitis
  • Post-operative states of respiratory tract
  • Voice disorders from overuse (teachers, lecturers)
  • Recurrent upper respiratory tract infections in children

Digestive system diseases

  • Peptic ulcer disease of stomach and duodenum
  • Chronic inflammation of stomach and intestines
  • Post-operative states of digestive tract
  • Functional digestive disorders

Metabolic diseases

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Obesity
  • Metabolic syndrome

How to proceed — step by step

1. Visit to GP or specialist doctor

The doctor will assess your health condition and if indications are met, complete a Proposal for spa care (form VZP-06/2002 or equivalent). Important: the proposal can also be submitted by a specialist doctor (pulmonologist, gastroenterologist, allergist).

2. Sending the proposal to insurance company

The doctor sends the proposal to your health insurance company. They have 30 days to decide.

3. Approval by reviewing doctor

The insurance company’s reviewing doctor assesses whether indication conditions are met. If yes, they approve and determine the spa location.

4. Appointment allocation

The spa facility will notify you of the start date. For comprehensive care, waiting time is usually 1–4 months.

5. Starting spa treatment

Take with you: ID card, insurance card, approved proposal, examination results and list of medications.

How to save money with contributory spa care?

With contributory care (PLP), you pay for accommodation yourself. Instead of expensive spa hotels, consider accommodation at Hotel Vincent:

  • 15 minutes’ walk from spa centre and springs
  • Significantly lower prices than spa houses
  • Modern facilities, infrared sauna, breakfast
  • Peaceful environment for recovery
  • You attend treatments at the spa house — same as from any accommodation

Frequently asked questions

How often can I go to spa treatment on insurance?

For most diagnoses, once every 2 years. For some serious conditions (post-operative, acute states) even sooner.

Can a child also go to spa treatment?

Yes. Children’s spa care is available in Luhačovice particularly for recurrent respiratory infections, asthma and allergies.

What if my insurance company rejects the proposal?

You can file an objection within 15 days. Alternatively, you can go as a self-paying client — and possibly use contribution from FKSP or employee benefits.
