Mineral springs in the vicinity of the spa town of Luhačovice

Stručná odpověď

Luhačovice's healing mineral springs extend well beyond the town itself, with notable sources found across the Carpathian-influenced Zlín region. Kostelec u Zlína, for example, has operated a spa since 1742, offering sulphur, carbonic and pearl baths, peat wraps and rehabilitation treatments. Many additional springs in the surrounding area remain largely unexplored.

Luhačovice could be called synonymous with healing mineral springs. However, many people are unaware of how many other springs are hidden in the area around Luhačovice. Whilst they may not be as famous or well-known, they can provide the same beneficial effects, and as a bonus, visiting them gives you a reason for an excursion or walk. A whole range of these waters spring up in the midst of pristine nature, and many may still be waiting for their future use. The frequent occurrence of mineral waters is thanks to the Carpathian region, which extends into the Zlín part of the territory.

Kostelec u Zlína

One such place is precisely Kostelec. In earlier years, in 1742, a spa was established here by an Austrian family. Gradually, spa buildings were erected here, which initially served only the nobility. In later years, the spa was rebuilt into a modern treatment centre, which became the social seat of the region. Joy and plans were thwarted by the Second World War, when the facility was severely damaged and nationalised. The spa was removed from the list of spa destinations. This was rectified again around 1994 and spa operations were restored. Today, the place serves the same purposes as before. Sulphur, carbonic or pearl baths, peat wraps, paraffin compresses and various therapeutic rehabilitations are carried out here. Of the 5 springs in Kostelec, 3 are utilised.

A Path Created by Sulphur Springs in Zádveřice

In the cadastral area of Zádveřice, there are about 40 sulphur springs, of which 5 mineral springs are accessible along an educational trail. The path is about 2 km long. The trail runs upstream along Horský Brook. The first mineral sulphur spring “U Staré hájenky” is about 300 m from the bus stop. You’ll also visit a spring called Sirkovice, two springs only a metre apart from each other, and lastly Jurčák’s spring. In the future, the path should be extended by another 6.5 km, which will connect 14 springs and sources. For some, the first taste of a sulphur spring can be quite a shock. These waters are characteristically distinguished by a strong odour reminiscent of rotten eggs.

Zlín Springs

In Zlín territory alone, there are 10 mineral springs. Two are located on Slatinský Brook – Studna Slanica is a small resting place on the edge of the forest. The water is slightly cloudy with an iron-like odour. Tomáš Baťa allegedly planned to build a smaller spa here during the First Republic. The water from the well is mildly mineralised. In 2008, the spring was cleaned. Below Malenovice Castle, 3 more springs emerge, which were formerly used for spa operations. Today they are considered almost unusable. There is the Sirné lázně well and the Pod lázněmi well. Small spas also existed at the sulphur spring in Březnice. Today the building is a family house.

The Vizovice Hills are also very rich in mineral springs. In Vizovice itself, during its greatest boom in the first half of the 20th century, there were three private spas. The largest of them – Mojžíš Spa – was transformed into Valašský šenk. Significant spas were also located in Napajedla. Their operation functioned to a limited extent until the end of the 20th century.
