In the surroundings of Luhačovice, you can find plenty of places that aren’t quite so heavily visited. For hikers, it’s certainly more pleasant when they don’t have to push past one another or when they can find a moment without the gaze of other travellers. Such a place can be found in the forests above Luhačovice.
The lake is quite close from Luhačovice, but for those unfamiliar with the area, the path can be difficult to find. The easiest way is to start at the Ottovka spring, which is located next to the tennis courts near the spa colonnade. Following the signpost, head towards the now burnt-down Slovácká búda. However, be careful that the path doesn’t lead you back to the spring. Leave the tarmac path and take the forest track uphill. Don’t rush. The ascent is gentle and brisk at first, then a steep hill appears before you.
Don’t let yourself get out of breath. You’ll reach a crossroads where the lake’s name appears on the signpost. Continue onwards. There are plenty of steep hills here, and you’ll reach a clearing. On the tree in front of you, a sign appears – 60m across the meadow. Walk straight across the entire meadow to the road. Cross it quickly and carefully, then plunge into the dark forest. The path downhill is paved with wide steps. On summer days, the forest can be surprisingly cool. In a moment, a water reservoir will spread out before you.
This is a small water reservoir that Count Serényi had built as a water supply for forest wildlife. It’s about 1 metre deep. The lake isn’t clean, but at first glance appears green and full of sludge. Even so, this place has become a popular tourist destination. Perhaps it’s because of the name, or perhaps because half the people have no idea what awaits them. You can walk around it completely, and you can rest in the small shelter that’s been built there. Those better equipped can even grill some sausages over the fire pit. Just be careful!
